House window cleaning tips from Get Set Clean
- Use a good glass cleaning solution
If you don’t select the right kind of glass cleaner, then your windows are going to look streaky and that is almost as bad as them being dirty! You still won’t be able to see through them properly, so you need to choose a glass cleaner which is ‘streak free’. This means your window interiors will be clear when the sun shines through them, instead of being covered in murky swirls!A lot of people use vinegar to clean windows. Many window cleaning solutions contain a form of vinegar, which is why they smell the way they do!
- Use the right kind of cloth
You need to be using the right kind of cloth for cleaning, and a separate one for buffing. The cleaning cloth should be lint-free. This means it has no bits on it that will stick to the window spray when you are cleaning the window. A jay-cloth works best. For buffing the window, you want something hard wearing which will remove all the remaining glass cleaner from the windows. A chamois leather cloth works best for this and it will leave a nice shine on the panes.
- Use the right technique
When cleaning the windows, you should use a vertical motion to remove the polish from the window pane. Vertical strokes work best as they allow you to spot any streaks that might be remaining on the glass – horizontal strokes can hide these streaks. The streaks can then be removed during the buffing stage, using the chamois leather cloth.
- Don’t clean when the sun is out
This might sound like a strange tip, but it is good advice. If you clean your windows when the sun is shining through them, then they will be streaky. This is because the sun will dry your cleaning solution too quickly, which leaves those unsightly smears all over the window panes.
- Get someone else to do it
